Serbian wedding in Toronto

I had never photographed a Serbian wedding before so it was an honour when Valentina and Steven asked me to be their wedding photographer. There are many differences, but mostly many dances happening as you will see. The wedding took place in Toronto at the Serbian Orthodox Church-St Michael the Archangel. I was assisted once again by the talented Janette Rojas. Not only this wedding was a little bit different, but I also experimented with a few new SAphoto tricks…

The bride was very pretty  and the preparation went pretty smoothly.

Before I go on further, let me introduce my improvised assistant of the day. She was very IN to the photography thing so I got her involved a little bit! Here she’s hiding under the bride’s dress holding my second flash…

I have done off-camera lighting before, but I never had the flash inside the bride’s dress!

This is the father of the bride. I remember vividly how he was complaining to me about the fact that you cannot buy booze in convenience stores in Ontario. Being from Quebec, I could not agree more!

Mother of the bride, which I thought looked like her daughter so much.

I told the make-up artist I wanted her face in that shot.
Copyright SAphoto

She did a very good job after all.

Now THAT is a dress!

Meanwhile the groom is preparing.

And the band is already playing… and will be ALL day and night!

Cool shot from Janette. This is a reflexion of the ceiling of the limo.

Father of the bride offering drinks. He did not offer one to me when this picture was taken, however he did offer before when we where back inside and I couldn’t refuse!

Now this is where it gets different for me. The groom, the band and everybody are coming inside to get the bride.
Copyright SAphoto

This is a very lively experience.

As the band is playing the people are dancing in the street.

Back in the limo.

…to the Church. Here I created an infrared effect.

And look who I caught drinking…

Valentina is patiently waiting in the limo.

Dancing is happening in front of the street as people are waiting for the bride to come out outside.

Here I thought I’d make the signing a little more interesting with different angles. From the top.

From the bottom.

Throwing of the bouquet is done right after the ceremony, which I thought was very interesting.

Followed by more dancing in the street.

Traffic had something interesting to look at.

And on to a nearby park.

I believe my improvised assistant was holding my second flash on a lot of these shots.

Here I suggested we tried to do the Costanza pose… it didn’t work out exactly as planned but this was quite a bit of fun.

And on to the hall: St. Nedela Macedonian Orthodox Church .

There is nothing fantastic about the following shot… but I thought it would be a funny reminder to Valentina and Steven about the very short power outage we had that night.

Of course more dancing.

The girls were quite coordinated.

Here I set-up a flash on the dance floor, which drew the attention of the kids. Another first!

A cake was brought to the couple. They both pull it their way and tradition has it that whoever gets the bigger piece gets to wear the pant in the couple. We have a winner!

As fore the real cake, a lot of it was spread on the couple’s face.

  2. Hi,
My name is Milica. I really like your pictures. Could you let me know how much you charge per day? My fiance and I are getting married on May 30th and we are thinking about getting prof. pictures done but are not sure. The wedding will be in Niagara Falls. Also, we are Serbian and are not sure where to find a Serbian band. Is there any possibility you might be able to give me a sugggestion or a contact for the music since you have photographed a Serbian wedding in the past.

    Thank you,

    Milica
